In 2016, virtual reality (VR) became widely recognized as a groundbreaking technology, reaching its peak popularity. However, this year, the excitement surrounding VR seemed to cool down somewhat. Despite the reduced attention, many people remain curious and eager to experience this new technology firsthand. For the average user, VR gaming offers perhaps the most accessible and engaging entry point.
I recently visited Beijing to explore some VR experience centers, hoping to get a hands-on feel for what the technology has to offer. I selected three popular VR experience shops based on public reviews and began my journey.
First, I headed to the Rockstone Technology VR Experience Museum, located in the 798 Art Zone in Jiuxianqiao. Hidden away, the shop’s exact address is on the second floor of the coffee shop at 751D Park, Jiuxianqiao Road. Finding it wasn’t too difficult thanks to the "Waiter Coffee" sign outside.
Once inside, I was struck by the modern, tech-focused ambiance. The dim lighting and blue hues created a futuristic atmosphere. The museum had a wide range of equipment on display, including HTC VIVE, PS VR, Gear VR, IDEALENS, and others. Each device was impressive in its own right, with the 980Ti graphics card driving the VR experiences.
My first experience involved a game called "Absolute Defense," played on a Deepoon VR headset with a motion-controlled gun. While the concept was straightforward—shooting waves of incoming monsters—it quickly grew monotonous. The visuals lacked sharpness, and the resolution and refresh rate weren't particularly high, causing some dizziness for me after a while.
Next, I tried a few Oculus-based games. One was a bike courier simulation where I delivered newspapers by pressing buttons on the handlebars. Another was a soccer goalie challenge that required me to position myself correctly to block shots. While these games provided a mild sense of fun, they felt limited in depth and immersive potential.
Things picked up significantly when I tried a racing game using HTC VIVE. The controls were more responsive, and the sense of movement was smoother. However, the game still exhibited noticeable lag, detracting from the overall experience.
The standout moment came with a zombie-shooting game that utilized VRCade equipment. Moving freely within the confined space and interacting with objects in the game world felt incredibly realistic. The immersion was unmatched, and the sense of accomplishment after successfully fending off hordes of zombies was exhilarating.
In terms of pricing, the Rockstone Museum charged 55 yuan for 30 minutes, which was reasonable considering the variety of experiences available. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly, providing useful insights into the equipment and answering my questions patiently.
Shifting gears, I then visited RASS13 District, located on the third floor of the World Trade Plaza South Street. The entrance featured interactive robots that added a playful touch. Inside, the space was compact but well-organized, with ample room for players to move around. The shop offered both single and double private rooms, making it ideal for solo or group experiences.
The equipment here was state-of-the-art, featuring a 10-series 1080 graphics card paired with HTC VIVE. The service was impeccable, with staff providing constant guidance and encouragement throughout the games. They even tailored recommendations based on my preferences, introducing me to an introductory game called "Walking in the Clouds." It was surprisingly thrilling, requiring balance and precision to navigate floating platforms.
A boxing game followed, where I used handheld controllers as virtual gloves. The physical exertion and feedback made it feel authentic. My companions opted for a team-based shooting game, which they thoroughly enjoyed despite the lack of headphones, which hindered auditory cues.
Pricing at RASS13 was steep, with a half-hour session costing 198 yuan. While the high cost reflects the premium quality of the service and content, it remains inaccessible for the average consumer. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a top-tier VR experience, this place is hard to beat.
Lastly, I stopped by the Mystery World VR Experience Pavilion, located on the 10th floor of Chaoyang Joy City. The shop was smaller than the others, with four distinct areas. The staff recommended multiplayer games, which they claimed offered a superior experience. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try any single-player games due to the limited content.
Overall, my trip to Beijing’s VR experience centers highlighted the potential of this technology while exposing some of its current limitations. Prices remain high, and the need for powerful hardware limits accessibility. Yet, for those willing to invest, VR gaming offers an unparalleled level of immersion. With more diverse offerings and affordable pricing models, VR could soon become a mainstream entertainment option.
