Nearly 20% of the world's electricity is used for lighting, 80% of which is used in professional applications such as construction, office, industrial or street lighting, and the remaining 20% ​​is used for residential lighting. Today, there are still a handful of independently adjustable lighting applications. No matter what time or season, indoor or outdoor, at home, school, factory or office, lighting usually has only one brightness or light color.

Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX/OTCQX: IFNNY) and its three research partners: Berlitz Electronics Co., Ltd., Degendorf University of Applied Sciences and Dresden University of Technology, hoping to change through the OpenLicht project all of these. The project aims to make lighting use creatively for everyone: from small and medium-sized companies in the lighting industry to design studios, interior designers, artists and electronics enthusiasts ("makers"). The result will be an innovative, flexible and independently adjustable lighting solution for a wide range of applications.

Intelligent lighting open source platform: making lighting solution development easy

The three-year OpenLicht research project is dedicated to creating an open development platform for the intuitive use of smart lights and lighting systems, including the use of self-learning methods to correlate light sources with sensor data and user data. For example, in a smart home, individual lighting sources and lighting settings (brightness, color temperature, etc.) for each room can be individually adjusted for different time periods. With the self-learning component, the brightness and color temperature will automatically adjust to the current temperature and weather data as well as personal preferences. The open source platform of the four project partners will help develop innovative light source solutions faster and at lower cost, even for small-scale production and stand-alone installation.

OpenLicht complex electronically controlled lighting system

The OpenLicht project is exploring three specific application scenarios: “Professional Lighting” for industrial user target groups, “Mood Lighting” for families, and “Lighting Models” for designers, architects, artists and makers. At the completion of the project, the partner will demonstrate for each scenario.

Four research partners are dedicated to making complex electronically controlled lighting systems available to the largest user community. To this end, their research focuses on the development of an open source platform consisting of hardware and software, while focusing on creating an intelligent, intuitive, self-learning lighting control system. Another key element of OpenLicht will be the ability to network with sensors and actuators using intelligent building man-machine interfaces.

The OpenLicht research project will continue until August 2019 with a total investment of approximately 4.5 million Euros. As part of the “Optical Technology – Made in Germany” program, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) provided 63% of its funding.

OpenLicht is one of the top 10 research projects funded by BBF under the Open Photonics development program. These research projects have different goals, including open and innovative approaches to improving the use of photonic components and systems, as well as open source methods that promote their widespread use, as well as ways to make the public more directly involved in science projects.
