Image Reviews | Price Quotes | Overview In terms of product positioning, X1 is undoubtedly the highest-end product line of ThinkPad, and the latest generation of X1 Carbon is the flagship model of ThinkPad's traditional ultrabooks. In the business sector, ThinkPad has always played a crucial role. As the fifth generation of this product, what changes have been made in the ThinkPad X1 Carbon? ThinkPad or ThinkPad? For such a classic product, the inheritance of its appearance is undoubtedly very important. Regardless of how the first generation of products evolved, they must retain the most classic design, which also gives old customers a sense of familiarity. The appearance of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 hasn’t changed significantly from its predecessor.  The carbon fiber surface provides the greatest degree of comfort, but this comes at the cost of fingerprints. The ThinkPad logo remains in the upper left corner, while the Lenovo logo is in the lower right corner. These details tell us that whether it’s the first generation or the latest model, it’s still the ThinkPad. Speaking of ThinkPad features, the iconic little red dot will still be located in the middle of the GHB keys, regardless of the generation. The keyboard feel remains excellent. The keyboard with the silent metal spring mechanism has not changed in touch, but it reduces the noise. In terms of interfaces, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 remains impressive. On the left side of the laptop, there are two Type-C ports, a USB 3.0 port, an HDMI port, and a mini-RJ45 port. On the right side, there’s a shutdown charging USB 3.0 port and a headphone-microphone combo port.   On its own, this generation of SD card readers is located behind the entire laptop, in the hinge area between the screen and keyboard. It’s easy to overlook if you’re not paying close attention.  Unchanged? How could it be? Although the ThinkPad’s appearance has always been classic, once you open the lid, you’ll notice the biggest change in this generation of X1 Carbon. The latest ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 features a narrow-bezel design with 5mm on the left and right sides and 9mm on the top. At the press conference, Lenovo specifically emphasized that the X1 Carbon’s narrow bezel design doesn’t compromise strength.  Although it’s a narrow bezel, the camera and microphone are still above the screen where they belong. When people use the camera, they naturally look upwards, avoiding issues like double chins or nostrils appearing during video calls. The microphone is also parallel to the mouth to ensure perfect audio quality.  In terms of keyboard layout, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 has also undergone some changes. To make things more convenient for users, F8-F12 now include new shortcut functions: Wi-Fi switch, Windows control panel, Bluetooth switch, keyboard settings page, and customizable function keys.  The location of the vents has also changed from the previous generation. This generation of ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 doesn’t use the previous generation’s hinge design but instead uses recessed hinges. As a result, the rear air outlet has moved to the right side of the laptop, which is more conducive to heat dissipation for a laptop like the X1 Carbon. The only downside is that the hot air blown from the right outlet after prolonged use might blow onto your hands.   For users who need larger screens, you can also purchase a separate monitor, using the Type-C interface as the connector, providing faster transmission speeds. With 99% sRGB color accuracy and 4.4mm bezels, whether for entertainment or work, the experience can be even more immersive.   In addition to improving visual effects with the narrow frame, the overall size of the laptop has also decreased. The current dimensions are 323.5 mm x 217.1 mm x 15.95 mm, which is nearly 1 cm shorter and narrower than the previous generation. In terms of weight, the body weighs 1.115 kg, and the travel weight is 1.459 kg, still excellent.  Go Further In terms of hardware, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 didn’t bring many surprises to everyone. The one I tested was equipped with an Intel Core i5-7200U, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. For business use, this is a very standard configuration. During testing, I ran several commonly used applications to assess this laptop. ■ CineBench R15 CineBench is a very reliable set of CPU and graphics testing systems, with the latest version being R15. Compared to R11.5, which supported up to 16 cores, the R15 version can handle up to 256 logical cores. Additionally, the new version improves shader investigation, anti-aliasing, shadows, lighting, and reflection blur, making the CPU performance test more accurate. ■ 3DMark 3DMark is a software developed by Futuremark to measure graphics card performance. Over time, 3DMark has evolved from a tool to measure graphics card performance to a software that evaluates overall machine performance. ■ AS SSD AS SSD Benchmark is a German SSD testing software that evaluates continuous read and write speeds, 4K alignment, 4KB random read/write, and response time performance, providing a comprehensive score. The software also includes a Compression Benchmark project, which generates a curve showing how performance changes as the compressible data occupancy (compression ratio) in the data model increases. ■ Office Software For a business laptop, relying solely on sub-data tests is always weak. I chose office software to test the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017. Opening 10 PPTs and 10 WORD documents simultaneously, the CPU usage rate is about 20%, showcasing strong performance. ■ Life Battery life is undoubtedly the most critical aspect of a business laptop. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017’s battery life is impressive. Starting at 1:10 PM with 100% brightness and using the keyboard backlight continuously for three and a half hours, there’s still 50% battery remaining.
