Spacex still accelerates rocket launch frequency after Falcon 9 explosion

Spacex is one of two companies certified to launch military and national security satellites for the US Air Force. According to an online version of Fortune magazine, Gwynne Shotwell, president of Spacex Technologies, said in an interview on Monday that the company plans to deploy the new launch pad in Florida next week. A "Falcon 9" launch vehicle was launched every two to three weeks, setting the fastest frequency since the Falcon 9 was launched in 2010.

Just five months before spacex disclosed this ambitious plan, Falcon 9 exploded on the launch pad at the Florida launch site. Since then, Spacex has only launched a rocket in mid-January.

"We should be able to launch a rocket every two to three weeks," Shortwell said in an interview with Reuters on Monday. Spacex approached the launch frequency last fall, but the September 1 accident caused the company to slow down again. The explosion destroyed a $200 million Israeli satellite and caused serious damage to the launch pad.

After the Falcon 9 explosion, spacex still speeds up the rocket launch frequency.

Shortwell said that the company's launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Base is still under repair and should cost "far less than half the cost of a new launch pad." She said the new launch pad cost about $100 million. The new launch pad is located at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, just north of the Cape Canaveral launch site.

She said spacex has also improved rocket engines to improve performance and eliminate potential safety concerns.

NASA has chosen Spacex to ship astronauts back and forth to the International Space Station from the end of 2018. Shortwell said spacex will install a new turbo pump on the engine before the first space flight test. Spacex plans to conduct the first test flight of a space taxi in November.

Spacex is one of two companies certified to launch military and national security satellites for the US Air Force. The other is the United Launch Alliance (ULA), a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Spacex currently has more than 70 launch missions worth more than $10 billion. Since launching the Falcon 9 in 2010, spacex has successfully completed 27 of 29 launch missions. Spacex's fourth launch site in Texas is under construction.
