LAPIS Semiconductor, a renowned global semiconductor manufacturer under the ROHM Group, has recently unveiled a groundbreaking RF LSI called the ML7404. This new wireless communication chip is designed for low-power wide-area network (LPWA) applications and marks a significant advancement in IoT connectivity. The ML7404 is the first dual-mode LPWA device to support both Sigfox and IEEE 802.15.4k standards, making it highly versatile for a wide range of smart applications.
Sigfox, widely adopted in over 30 countries, is a subscription-based LPWA technology that operates on unlicensed sub-GHz bands, ideal for urban environments. On the other hand, IEEE 802.15.4k is known for its strong resistance to interference and high capacity for connecting multiple devices on the same network. With this dual-mode capability, the ML7404 offers developers greater flexibility and reliability in deploying IoT solutions across different regions and use cases.
The ML7404 also features a hardware-based BPSK modulation circuit specifically for Sigfox, which significantly reduces power consumption. Unlike traditional approaches that rely on microcontrollers to generate BPSK signals, this hardware implementation allows the microcontroller to remain in sleep mode during communication, leading to more energy-efficient systems.
ROHM has also provided comprehensive development support, including an evaluation kit with sample programs and reference designs. Additionally, the protocol stack for IEEE 802.15.4k will be open-sourced, further encouraging adoption and innovation in the IoT space.
The ML7404 is scheduled for mass production starting in December 2017, with a monthly output of 100,000 units. It comes in tape-and-reel packaging, making it suitable for automated assembly lines.
