In a modern educational setting, group discussions can now be enhanced in real time through interactive tools like "barrage" features. With the use of touchscreens, students can visually represent their design concepts directly on large screens. By wearing VR (virtual reality) headsets, they can even experience space travel. On November 22, the WonderLab at the University of Nottingham Ningbo opened its doors, offering an exciting new environment for learning and exploration.
Located on the third floor of the University Library, the exploration space spans approximately 150 square meters. It is equipped with cutting-edge technology such as multi-screen interactive devices, multi-touch desks, and VR equipment, all integrated into the teaching process. The goal is to break away from traditional classroom setups and create a student-centered learning environment that fosters creativity and active participation.
In the multi-screen interactive area, there's no traditional podium. Teachers move freely around the room, engaging with students who can either work in groups or listen attentively. Each group has a multimedia screen at their table, allowing students to connect their personal devices and collaborate on projects. They can simultaneously input comments, edit shared documents, and view updates in real time—similar to live chat features on video platforms.
Clayton Austin, the head of the exploration space, explained, “With multi-screen teaching, students no longer need to pass around a single document. Everyone has access to the same content in real time, making collaboration more efficient and dynamic.â€
The multi-touch desktop, a 54-inch screen, allows for 3D visualization of architectural models, design blueprints, and diagrams. Users can zoom, drag, and flip elements with their fingers, enabling collaborative design work and instant presentation of team results. “This approach gives students a more immersive and visual way to present their ideas, making class discussions more engaging and enhancing their overall learning experience,†said Clayton Austin.
VR technology is also being used in the lab. “VR is becoming a powerful tool in education,†he added. “It allows students to explore scenarios that are hard to replicate in real life, such as explosions, atomic reactions, molecular structures, or even space travel. They can land on Mars or explore the galaxy without leaving the classroom, turning abstract concepts into vivid, hands-on experiences.â€
Currently, the Business School and the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Nottingham Ningbo have started using the space for teaching. Looking ahead, the lab plans to collaborate with departments like architecture, industrial design, and aerospace to develop new teaching models. Students will also have the opportunity to book the lab for project-based research and development.
“We are also planning to introduce VR production courses to teach students how to create virtual environments,†said Clayton Austin. “Our aim is to continue integrating emerging technologies into the classroom and provide students with innovative learning opportunities.â€
