Five reasons to abandon today's popular LED TRIAC dimmers

Today, the reason why semiconductor suppliers are generally launching LED drivers that support TRIAC dimming is not because of the exceptional performance of this dimming method, just because the consumer map is convenient, because many European and American household markets today use TRIAC. Dimmers dim incandescent lamps, and they want to replace incandescent bulbs directly with LED luminaires without any modifications to the existing infrastructure, that is, no rewiring is required.

The problem is that for capacitively-loaded LED lighting fixtures, the TRIAC dimmer has five major adverse effects, so strictly speaking this is not a good dimming technology.

The first major adverse effect is that TRIAC dimming inevitably destroys the power factor because it uses digesting for dimming, especially for deep dimming, the power factor becomes very low, which in turn affects the quality of the entire grid.

The second major adverse effect is that TRIAC dimming can cause severe EMI interference, because when the load is capacitive, the thyristor turn-on and turn off will produce a strong surge on the output current waveform, and this surge current will cause serious EMI interference.

The third major adverse effect is that TRIAC dimming will cause the power conversion efficiency of the entire luminaire to be low. When performing deep dimming, the efficiency will be less than 20%.

The fourth major adverse effect is that the TRIAC dimmer is not matched with the LED lighting fixture, and this easily causes the output light to flicker, affecting the consumer experience and even bringing health problems.

The fifth major adverse effect is that TRIAC dimmers can cause serious THD problems, and international energy standards such as EN61000-3-2 begin to require strict THD specifications.

All in all, LED lighting fixtures using TRIAC dimmers for dimming are not a good choice. Dr. Liu Guanghua, general manager of Taiwan New Green Technology, pointed out: "Strictly speaking, TRIAC dimmers are an inferior product that is more and more difficult to correct for energy conservation and environmental protection, power systems and general consumers. It is recommended that you use other intelligent dimming technologies. ”
