Shang Bing expects: In 2018, China Mobile has 120 new IoT connections, and its total number of connections exceeds 320 million.

At the China Mobile (microblogging) Global Partner Conference held today, Chairman Shang Bing shared key updates on the company's latest developments. As of now, China Mobile has deployed 3.23 million mobile base stations, including 1.79 million 4G towers, serving over 1 billion users across various segments. This impressive growth highlights the company's expanding network and service reach. Among these 1 billion users, there are 880 million mobile subscribers, more than 100 million home users, nearly 6 million government and enterprise clients, and over 200 million Internet of Things (IoT) connections. The user base is continuously evolving, with a strong emphasis on optimizing both user demographics and revenue streams. Notably, 4G users make up over 71% of the total, and mobile data traffic has become the primary revenue driver for the company. China Mobile has also seen significant progress in voice services, with over 160 million VoLTE users. On average, each 4G household consumes more than 2.1 GB of data per month. In addition, sectors such as government and enterprise, residential services, and emerging business areas are becoming major contributors to the company’s revenue growth. An image accompanying the announcement shows that China Mobile’s user base has surpassed one billion, with an ambitious target of reaching 18 billion IoT connections in the future. Looking ahead, China Mobile believes the Smart Internet of Everything is entering a phase of rapid expansion. By 2020, it is projected that global connected devices will reach 29 billion, with 18 billion being IoT-related. These connections are expected to be widely applied in urban development, manufacturing, logistics, smart homes, security, transportation, healthcare, and education—offering new opportunities for the information and communication industry. Shang Bing highlighted that China Mobile plans to add 120 million new IoT connections in 2018, pushing the total beyond 320 million. This expansion will significantly boost the company’s business and revenue, especially in vertical industries. In terms of strategic planning, China Mobile has launched the "139" comprehensive cooperation initiative. This includes promoting a new NB-IoT network, establishing three major industry alliances—the IoT Industry Alliance, Digital Home Cooperation Alliance, and 5G Lianchuang Center—and developing nine key application scenarios. Regarding 5G, the company aims to advance the maturity of 5G technology and build a robust ecosystem, with commercial deployment expected by 2020. This marks a crucial step in China Mobile’s journey toward leading the next generation of connectivity.
