Panasonic set a goal: to develop a fully self-driving electric car in 2020

On November 30th, according to the Kyodo News Agency, Panasonic is advancing empirical tests for the development of a small electric vehicle (EV) capable of fully autonomous driving. The technology uses image recognition technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to strive to complete development around 2020. Panasonic does not want to sell the car itself, but instead aims to provide technology or accept design outsourcing for car manufacturers in the future.

According to reports, domestic and foreign automakers and IT companies are competing to develop autonomous vehicles, and the Japanese government has also listed them as key projects in the economic growth strategy. Panasonic also hopes to cultivate automotive-related businesses such as car batteries, sensors, and cameras into profit growth points.

Self-driving car

The EV in the test was a small car for two people, basically running at a low speed of 40 kilometers per hour. It is currently envisaged to be used in a limited area such as a commercial facility. A plurality of cameras and sensors are mounted on the vehicle to confirm the front, rear, left and right conditions to prevent collision. At the same time, the use of AI, satellite positioning system (GPS) and other technologies, and strive to achieve full automatic driving.

The prototype has started the test on the test road set in Yokohama City. This year, we will conduct tests on the nearby roads of the company headquarters in Osaka, Osaka, and then consider driving on actual roads.

The person in charge of the company predicted that "in addition to passenger cars, technical applications for vehicles such as agricultural tractors and logistics facilities are also envisaged."
