New York State Launches Solar Energy Application Demonstration Project

The Riverview Solar Technology Park in New York launched a demonstration project for solar technology applications in April 2011. The demonstration project will install a scaled down solar power system consisting of 60 solar panels produced by DuPont, which will produce 6 kilowatts of electricity and provide lighting for the park. The system will be installed by the end of May or early June.

In general, DuPont's amorphous silicon or thin-film solar panels are sold and used outside of the United States in warmer southern climates. The purpose of the demonstration project is to demonstrate that solar technology can be applied in northern climate conditions to promote the development of solar energy in northern regions of the United States. Dupont said that at dawn, dusk and rainy days, the solar panels they produce can maintain good conversion efficiency. As a result, its 10-kilowatt amorphous silicon solar panel system can produce 10-20% more electricity than a typical 10-kilowatt solar panel system. DuPont also said that its product panels are more beautiful in color and will not conflict with the surrounding environment.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority gave a certain amount of funding for the project and requested that the system must meet design targets that are less than 110% of annual electricity consumption.
