On January 17th, Baidu celebrated the 8th anniversary of its input method with a special event titled “AI Input, Opening the Era of Full-Sensory Input†held in Beijing. The conference brought together employees, partners, industry media, and numerous users of Baidu Input Method to explore the future of AI-driven communication. During the event, Baidu unveiled its latest breakthrough in speech technology—the DeepPeak2 model—and introduced the new v8.0 version of its input method, setting the stage for the next era of intelligent input.
In an AI-driven world, how we interact with technology is evolving rapidly. At the conference, Wang Haifeng, Vice President of Baidu’s AI Technology Platform System (AIG), shared insights on how Baidu's AI innovations are paving the way for full-sensory input. He emphasized that since Baidu started investing in AI eight years ago, the company has not only integrated advanced AI into its products but also opened up these technologies to developers and partners, fostering a collaborative AI ecosystem.
Wang stated, “The input method serves as the gateway to Baidu’s AI technology. In the future, we aim to develop more intelligent input solutions that can better understand user expressions and truly transform people’s lives through AI.†He added that full-sensory input is already part of our daily lives—whether it’s voice correction in Baidu Input or the driver fatigue monitoring system showcased at last year’s Baidu World Congress. These innovations go beyond traditional keyboard input, enabling machines to understand context, recognize user intent, and adapt to real-world scenarios.
As AI continues to evolve, practical applications are becoming more essential. On the same day, Baidu announced a major breakthrough in AI voice technology with the DeepPeak2 model and launched the v8.0 version of its input method. This update introduces two groundbreaking features: “Voice Shorthand†and “AR Expression.â€
“Voice Shorthand†supports both single-user and multi-speaker modes, leveraging advanced AI technologies like long-utterance recognition and voiceprint identification to distinguish between different speakers. Meanwhile, “AR Expression†uses facial recognition to allow users to control animated characters based on their expressions. The design draws inspiration from traditional Chinese New Year paintings, including the intangible cultural heritage of Taohuawu and Mianzhu New Year pictures. With just one click, users can send these expressive animations, adding a fun and culturally rich dimension to communication.
Baidu has been deeply invested in AI since its early days. Its strong internet foundation has enabled the company to pursue a comprehensive “All-in-AI†strategy. Known as “China’s Good Tongue,†Hua Shao even challenged Baidu’s speech recognition capabilities live on stage. In a remarkable demonstration, Baidu correctly recognized a 426-character monologue in just 58 seconds, leaving the audience in awe.
