Especially in the case of the relatively sluggish epitaxial chip field, the domestic MOCVD equipment has been released, and this level of excitement is surprising. While we are happy to see it, we can’t help but wonder.

In the case that key components are still dependent on imports, how is domestic MOCVD “made out”, can its price/performance ratio be higher than that of imported equipment? How far is domestic MOCVD from marketization? At this point, most of China's epitaxial chip manufacturers should be concerned about how the epitaxial chips produced can be sold out and can obtain relatively good profits.

"After a round of crazy purchases, which extension manufacturers still have the mind to customize new MOCVD equipment? Why are domestic MOCVD equipment manufacturers always unable to keep up with the pace? At this time, domestic MOCVD equipment has been released, what can be divided? Is it a cold meal?" said an industry insider.

On December 27, 2012, the second-generation mass production MOCVD equipment jointly developed by Guangdong Zhaoxin Group, Zhaoxin Semiconductor Equipment Co., Ltd. and Huazhong University of Science and Technology has passed the appraisal of Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Department expert group, and it is expected to be introduced to the domestic market in the future.

Time to push forward, on December 6, 2012, Shanghai Ideal New Energy Equipment Co., Ltd. officially launched the first MOCVD equipment, and officially signed the first MOCVD equipment shipment with Taiwan Yuyuan Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. and the subsequent 37 units. On November 29, 2012, China Micro Semiconductor Equipment Co., Ltd. held the first MOCVD equipment delivery customer ceremony.

On September 11, 2012, Tianlong Optoelectronics announced that Jiangsu Zhonghao Semiconductor Equipment Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the company, has signed a MOCVD equipment sales contract with a customer.

On October 20, 2011, Ganzhao Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary Yangzhou Ganzhao Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. purchased a MOVCD from Beijing Esprit Semiconductor Equipment Co., Ltd.

Each equipment manufacturer claims to have delivered it to an extension manufacturer. Can this "delivery" allow the user to truly reach the mass production level? Is there any secret of unreliable people behind the delivery? Is this a transaction that is “free use by extension manufacturers and government subsidies”?

Dr. Zhang Xiaofei, Dean of the High Industry Industry Research Institute, said: "I am afraid these deliveries are not substantial sales."

According to industry insiders, the Zhaoxin Group started as the first, but it was also the first to encounter difficulties. In addition to having to overcome the design of the reaction chamber, domestic suppliers must be trained. "After 2010, after the prototype was promoted, it took Zhaoxin two years to control the stability of the equipment. In fact, it is clear whether it is a design problem or a component quality problem."

Obviously, the 37-piece machine is not an epoch-making initiative, but as a result of the letter, it is indeed a stone crossing the river. Unfortunately, the price/performance ratio is still difficult to compete with imported equipment. Perhaps local government support can last for a while.

"Usually the first few will not be substantive transactions. Now it is basically the local government's cost of testing the equipment factory for several million yuan, and the equipment manufacturers are free to use the extension manufacturers." “The subsidy of 10 million yuan for imported MOCVD equipment in the previous two years by the local government seems to be the chief culprit in the current LED industry.” Zhang Xiaofei said, “The most direct harm is the overcapacity, the epitaxial chip. The price war came early, and the government’s intervention policy in the past few years is obviously not conducive to the healthy development of the industry."

In the view of Zhao Jinrong, president of Northern Microelectronics, due to government subsidies, the export of MOCVD equipment by foreign companies has also caused some domestic MOCVD equipment manufacturers to lose some temporary market opportunities, but they do not have to be too entangled. "From the perspective of the future development of the LED industry, the total amount of existing MOCVD is not enough. From the perspective of technological progress, existing MOCVD will face a new generation."

For the domestic MOCVD equipment that is now known to be shipped, Zhao Jinrong said that it needs to remain calm: "MOCVD equipment must be able to be applied in large production lines, and generally requires several generations of development and verification."

As for the embarrassment, the industry insiders said frankly: "True gold is not afraid of fire, I hope that customers can share the results of the verification with the industry as soon as possible, so that who knows who is true, who has real strength, who is engaged in research and development. The flag flicks the subsidy of the government."

Zhao Jinrong said that the way out for domestic MOCVD equipment is to "practice internal strength." MOCVD equipment is not just “imitation” but “innovation”. “The market opportunities for MOCVD will continue to emerge.”

The true localization and marketization of MOCVD equipment, the correct guidance of the government is indispensable, which may be a problem worth pondering.
