A few months ago, while commissioning a project, I encountered some serious issues with the communication performance of an industrial Ethernet network using a star topology. The data transmission speed between the local substations was extremely slow, and even the communication between the upper system and the local stations was lagging significantly. Some control functions couldn’t be executed at all, which made it clear that there was a critical network issue that needed to be resolved immediately.

After spending a considerable amount of time analyzing the problem and conducting various experiments, I finally found three effective solutions. I decided to share them here in hopes that they might help others facing similar challenges.

1) I replaced the original Read_Reg function block used for inter-station data reading with CRead_Reg in the Momentum series PLC program, which is based on Concept 2.6. This allowed the module to automatically read the required data continuously, improving efficiency and reducing delays.

2) Previously, the sub-stations were treated as equal peers, with both A and B stations reading from each other. This often caused network congestion. After optimization, one station was designated as the main station, which initiated the read/write operations, fetching the necessary data from the other station and sending its own data back. This approach reduced unnecessary traffic and improved overall communication stability.

3) I also optimized the data transmission part of the original program by replacing multiple separate read/write function blocks with a single continuous read/write operation across multiple registers. This not only simplified the code but also significantly improved the speed and reliability of data exchange.

By implementing these three improvements, the network communication issue was successfully resolved. The system now runs smoothly, with faster data transfer and more reliable control functions. I hope this experience can be useful to others working with industrial Ethernet networks.
