Graphene industrial preparation technology has been successfully developed!

According to John Robertson of Cambridge University, a partner of the GRAFOL project, after four years of hard work, they successfully developed a roll-to-roll production process for large-scale production of large-area single-layer carbon materials. He said: "This is the first time to develop high-quality preparation technology with commercial value. Other related technologies are limited to academic papers. The equipment we developed can be operated at atmospheric pressure, and the operating temperature is also reduced. Good low-cost production process route." He added: "We confirmed the feasibility of this technology, he is flexible, but more importantly, low cost. If graphene costs more than several times other materials, no one will use."

Project team members believe that such graphene can be used to replace transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes used in organic semiconductor illumination, and its flexibility can be flexibly designed while helping to reduce the supply dependence on scarce indium.

The core of the project is the metal organic chemical vapor deposition equipment from AIXTRON, Germany, which is widely used to deposit active semiconductor layers for LED and semiconductor laser structures. They grew graphene on a 300 micron diameter silicon wafer (standard size for the semiconductor industry) in a roll-to-roll process and chemical vapor deposition. This demonstrates the potential to integrate graphene in a silicon photovoltaic platform.

However, Robertson also stressed that the actual use of rolling equipment to manufacture graphene still has to overcome some major challenges. For example, he said: "The use of graphene to other substrates still requires a transfer process."

In addition, photonic technology has also played an important role in the GRAFOL project, benefiting from the new graphene production method, which uses light scattering spectroscopy to monitor the growth of the graphite layer.
