Apple Pay's initial use rate is declining

Apple Pay has been around for a while since its release last year, but according to the latest media reports, consumers seem to be less flustered about this technology.

According to the latest statistics from shopping research company InfoScout, the usage rate of Apple Pay is declining, which makes investors worry about this service. Investors are worried that Apple Pay will eventually escape the fate of failure.

According to InfoScout's latest research report, only 2.7% of consumers who used Apple Pay for shopping on Black Friday weekend used the service, down from 4.6% in the same period last year. Compared with last year's Black Friday weekend, this year's usage rate has dropped by nearly 41%. Considering that Apple has been sparing no effort to promote this service in the past year, this result is obviously very disappointing.

InfoScout pointed out in the report that the decline in Apple Pay usage is mainly due to the fact that the number of iPhone 6 users is more than last year, which means that the base for calculating usage is larger than last year. When InfoScout counted the usage of this service last year, the iPhone 6 was just released, and the user base is obviously much smaller than it is now.

In addition, the raw data for this study comes from a copy of the payment receipt submitted by the user, which is only about 300,000 in total, which means that the results of this study may not represent the national situation.

BI Intelligence wrote in its own report: "Considering that Apple Pay has been widely promoted within a year, it is puzzling to draw such a conclusion."

InfoScout pointed out that consumers still prefer to pay with traditional credit cards or bank cards, and 79% of iPhone users and 74% of Android users still choose to pay by credit card or bank card.

This is not the first time we have heard of this: even if consumers have mobile payment solutions installed on their phones, they are not willing to use it. According to a research report released by market research firm Trustev in October, only about 20% of US iPhone users who use Apple Pay have tried to use the service. Of the users who have used Apple Pay, 15.3% said they only used it on weekends.

In fact, this is an important challenge that has been faced since the advent of Apple Pay and other mobile payment solutions. Although these services are convenient to use, they do not significantly improve the consumer's payment experience, because card payment is not too much trouble.

PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel said in an interview with the media that this could be the biggest obstacle to services like Apple Pay.

Tell said: "For a new payment product, you always ask how much better than the current solution? When we just created PayPal, it is true for the small merchants on the eBay platform. It's much more convenient than cashing the check in the mail, because the latter usually takes 7 to 10 days."

He said: "Apple Pay may continue to improve, and it may be getting better and better, but if you already have something that is quite convenient and quite good, then it is difficult to increase the usage rate because of the gap between them. Not so big."

It is worth mentioning that Apple Pay has been officially launched for less than two years, and the entire mobile payment market is still in its infancy. eMarketer recently said that the number of mobile payment transactions will triple by next year, and Auriemma ConsulTIng Group's survey shows that Apple Pay's user satisfaction reached 98%. But this does not explain why Apple Pay usage will decline or overall usage is not high.

Apple did not comment on this.
