**Why Do You Want to Activate the New Energy Car Number Plate? What Is the Background and Significance?**
In July 2014, the General Office of the State Council issued the "Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Promotion and Application of New Energy Vehicles," aiming to speed up the adoption of eco-friendly vehicles. This move was designed to ease energy consumption pressures and reduce environmental impact, while also supporting the transformation and upgrading of China's automotive industry. Over the years, the number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China has surged dramatically. By the end of October 2016, the total number of pure electric vehicles nationwide had reached 555,500.
To meet the government’s goals for implementing differentiated traffic management policies for NEVs and to further support their growth, the Ministry of Public Security introduced a special license plate system. The new plates help distinguish NEVs more clearly, enabling tailored traffic rules and better access to benefits like travel convenience, parking discounts, and tax incentives. Additionally, the design of the new plates highlights the unique features of NEVs, promoting greater public awareness and encouraging faster adoption.
The Ministry of Public Security took a gradual approach to roll out the new license plates, starting with pilot programs in selected cities. Starting from December 1, 2016, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuxi, Jinan, and Shenzhen were among the first to implement the new system. Later, in September 2017, the Ministry announced that 10 more cities would join the initiative in November. By the first half of 2018, the new energy-specific license plates were fully activated across the country, marking a major step in the national push for sustainable transportation.
The new energy license plate is primarily green in color and comes in two versions: one for small vehicles and another for larger ones. Unlike traditional plates, which have five digits, these new plates feature six digits, reducing the chances of duplicate numbers. Moreover, the letters "D" and "F" are used to indicate whether the vehicle is purely electric or a hybrid model.
In addition to the updated numbering system, the new license plates include a distinctive logo. Instead of a small dot, the design uses a circular plug-like symbol. Advanced security features such as two-dimensional barcodes, anti-counterfeiting shading, and laser patterns have been incorporated to significantly enhance the plate’s resistance to fraud and forgery.
These improvements not only make the plates more secure but also reflect the innovation and progress of the new energy vehicle industry. As more cities adopt the new system, the goal is to create a more efficient, environmentally friendly, and technologically advanced transportation network for the future.
