Cree optimizes distributed lighting to expand the maximum combination of lighting-grade LED products

On March 3, Cree announced the launch of the XLamp® ML-B LED. XLamp® ML-B LEDs are designed to operate at quarter-watt power, extending lighting-level performance to distributed applications where light sources are visible, such as panel lights and LED-based fluorescent tube replacements.


Lighting manufacturers have attempted to achieve a uniform lighting appearance by densely placing many low power LEDs under the diffuser. However, the use of typical low-power LEDs does not allow manufacturers to meet the stringent requirements of ENERGY STAR or meet customer expectations. The emergence of Cree XLamp® ML-B LEDs will change this. With a design life of 50,000 hours, it provides illumination-grade efficacy, thermal resistance and reliability to support ENERGY STAR® compliant luminaires.

Paul Thieken, director of LED components marketing at Cree, said, "Innovative ML-B LEDs can meet the needs of a wide range of lighting manufacturers for smooth and uniform appearance while providing lighting-grade performance for distributed lighting applications. ML-B LEDs A perfect balance of light output, package size, efficacy and value for direct lighting applications has been successfully achieved."

At a drive current of 80 mA, the cool white (5000K) ML-B LED has a light output of up to 30 lm, and the warm white (3000K) ML-B LED has a light output of up to 24 lm. The ML-B LEDs are the same size and package as the ML-E LEDs and, like the ML-E, offer tightly controlled chromaticity spatial uniformity and a 120 degree illumination angle.
