Western Digital is still not optimistic about SSDs

The rapid development of SSDs has given flash makers hope to join them. Although Samsung Electronics and Toshiba are also superior to traditional hard drives, they are also quite enthusiastic about SSDs as the world's largest flash memory vendor. Looking back at Western Digital, Seagate and Hitachi, they are cautious about solid-state drives. They have only tested some solid-state drive products in the enterprise-class space. There does not seem to be any sign of large-scale transformation.

Western Digital CEO John Coyne told analysts at a recent financial conference: “We have already noticed solid-state drives, and in fact have introduced corresponding products, but because of the economic environment, we believe that both manufacturers and customers , (Solid-state drives) have no attractive value proposition. The cost of storage performance is too high."

Seagate has introduced a hybrid hard drive product, the Momentus XT, and received a good response. Seagate also predicted that hybrid hard drives will occupy up to 80% of their product lines in five years. Western Digital has similar ideas.

John Coyne claims, “We are also continuing to evaluate the opportunity to combine magnetic storage and flash memory into a hybrid approach... We are looking at how we can better integrate the performance of solid-state storage with the capacity of magnetic media... and provide affordable Price point."

He added: "The current operating system does not support this kind of device (hybrid hard drive) very well, but it will change in the future. Looking forward to the next few years, we think the opportunities for this kind of equipment are emerging and can be provided ( More balanced) performance, capacity, and value."

Very happy, Western Digital has not announced any plans for hybrid hard drives, and is it still a bit too slow to assess?

In the fourth quarter of 2010, Western Digital shipped 55.2 million HDDs, which was 48.9 million ahead of Seagate's. The position of the hard disk market leader also widened the gap between the old rivals.
