With the growing demand for in-vehicle infotainment systems, car manufacturers are increasingly focused on creating seamless and intelligent connections between vehicle displays and various mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of integrated circuits (ICs), has introduced five new USB 2.0 smart hub ICs designed to offer greater flexibility and performance. These ICs come in multiple architectures, allowing automotive designers to tailor their solutions to meet both functional and user experience requirements.
The newly launched smart hubs support a wide range of system configurations, making it easier for automakers to connect their vehicles with major smartphone operating systems. They enable users to display their phone or tablet’s graphical interface on the car's screen, integrate voice commands, charge devices, and even support advanced driver-assistance features through mobile apps.
These smart hub ICs can be cascaded into second- and third-row seating areas, ensuring that data is available across all ports while also supporting charging. For instance, one port can connect a device to the car’s main system, while another can simultaneously charge and transfer data. The USB4914, USB4916, USB4925, and USB4927 models allow automakers to create custom solutions that enhance the in-car entertainment experience. As vehicles evolve into mobile entertainment centers, these ICs help support scenarios where one device is used for navigation, while another handles music or video playback.
Mitch Obolsky, Vice President of USB and Networking Products at Microchip, stated, “As a leader in USB hub ICs for the automotive industry, our long-term commitment to innovation ensures that we provide unique host/device bus configurations. This enables safer and more efficient access to information for assisted driving and communication.â€
The new USB4715, USB4914, USB4916, USB4925, and USB4927 smart hub ICs feature single and dual bus implementations, offering robust connectivity to in-vehicle infotainment systems. Each device uses standard USB drivers, simplifying system development and field updates. Additionally, they include a 32-bit microcontroller for enhanced bridging, audio application support, and USB Power Delivery (PD).
For developers, Microchip provides application demonstration boards and evaluation kits for each new USB 2.0 smart hub IC. These boards simulate real-world applications used by Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs. The company also showcases a USB-powered solution that complies with the USB PD 3.0 specification, further demonstrating its commitment to innovation and reliability in automotive electronics.
