The battle for VR chips is on the rise

VR is not only the opportunity for the rise of hardware devices and software content providers, but also a good opportunity for the underlying chip vendors to seize the blue ocean. Chip makers are all struggling to find a place in the big industry chain of VR. ARM CEO Simon Segars said in an interview: "The VR for high-end experience requires high computing power and graphics performance. These things are still very expensive. But we also saw everything happening on smartphones, digital cameras and TVs. The price reduction of such products is very rapid, and high-end technology will soon become civilian."

At the same time, some experience bottlenecks in VR hardware have also enabled chip manufacturers to have more development opportunities, break through existing obstacles, and promote the development of new technologies in the direction of further commercialization. With the further fierce VR market and the full commercialization of the future, VR chips may even become a big market after the development of the chip industry after the smart phone. Therefore, in a certain sense, behind the current virtual reality is a battle between chip manufacturers.

Expected to develop VR chip

However, observing the VR chips on the market, it can be found that most of the current chip manufacturers are only based on the SoC of their smartphones and tablets, and optimized for VR and then launched, there are few chips specifically developed for VR. Nathan Brookwood, principal analyst at market research firm Insight 64, said that most virtual reality helmet chips are currently based on mobile devices or PC chips. However, if VR helmet sales reach tens of millions, Intel, AMD and Qualcomm may develop dedicated chips.

The cost of chip development is very high, and only when the sales volume reaches a certain scale is economically meaningful. Market research firm Gartner predicts that this year's virtual reality helmet sales will increase from 140,000 units last year to 1.4 million units, and will further increase to 6.3 million units next year. In the past few years, virtual reality has developed rapidly.
