Intel VR field continues to move, acquiring virtual reality vendor Voke

November 4, according to the Wall Street Journal, PC chip giant Intel is completing the acquisition of a small company called Voke. The latter's main business is the creation of virtual reality scenarios based on real-time actions.

Voke and Intel belong to the same technology company that originated in Santa Clara, Calif., and currently employs more than 20 people. The specific terms of the transaction regarding the acquisition are not known.

Virtual reality is on the rise. At present, most virtual reality software is created based on virtual scenes, but the "TrueVR" system developed by Voke collects real-time images of real-world scenes through stereo cameras, and provides viewers with three-dimensional viewing angles through virtual headsets.

Founded in 2004, Voke has worked with broadcasters and related industries to use its technology to broadcast live VR games to basketball games and fashion shows, giving users a wider variety of viewing options.

Intel

Although Intel dominates the traditional chip industry, VR Sports is one of them because of the shrinking global PC market and the failure to seize the opportunity to dominate the smartphone chip market. Intel can't wait to find a position in the new competition. In March of this year, Intel announced the acquisition of Israeli company Replay Technologies, whose 3D video technology is widely used in US sports broadcasts. The specific terms of the acquisition were not disclosed to the outside world, but according to the Wall Street Journal, the purchase price was between $150 million and $170 million.

Recently, Intel has been constantly moving in the field of VR, not only vigorously promoting its RealSense 3D camera technology, but also launching its own virtual headset. In August of this year, Intel demonstrated Project Alloy, a head-mounted prototype with a front-facing camera. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich calls it "merged reality," which refers to the fusion of real-life scenes captured by RealSense and virtually created objects.

According to Wendell Brooks, Intel's vice president of mergers and acquisitions, virtual reality is an attractive area, and Intel is doing its part in providing the computing power needed for VR. And it is expected that future sports broadcasts and VR games will bring a lot of benefits. At the same time, Brooks also pointed out the current lack of quality consumer content in the VR market. And said that through the acquisition of Voke, Intel can help the VR market to develop in a better direction. After the acquisition, Intel plans to further cooperate with the US basketball and broadcasters.
