Asustek and ZTE claimed that their flagship models are compatible with Daydream, but have not been confirmed by Google. However, Google disclosed a list of smartphone requirements that support Daydream.
Liliputing said that Google this week released the Android 7.0 compatibility definition document, which elaborated Google's detailed requirements for mobile phones preloaded with the Google Play Store and other applications. Although Android is open source software, Google Apps is not. If you want to pre-install Play Store, YouTube, Gmail, and other core applications on your phone, device manufacturers need to comply with Google's license terms.
Section 7.9 of the document relates to virtual reality. Section 7.9.2 addresses the requirements for supporting Daydream handsets. The following are the main requirements:
• Screen size must be between 4.7-6 inches
• For displays requiring 1080p or higher resolution, 1440p or higher resolution displays are highly recommended.
• The display refresh rate is not lower than 60Hz in the virtual reality mode.
• The display gray-white, black-white and black-white switching delay time cannot be longer than 3 milliseconds.
• The display persistence time cannot be longer than 5 milliseconds.
• The device must integrate at least 2 physical cores, one of which is fully used for foreground applications in virtual reality mode.
• Bluetooth 4.2
• OpenGL ES 3.2
• Vulkan Hardware Level 0 must be supported and Vulkan Hardware Level 1 is recommended.
• Decodes 30 frames per second, 3840 x 2160 resolution video.
Liliputing claims that other requirements relate to performance. For example, the GPU and the display must be able to synchronize access to the pre-buffer to ensure that no visible tearing occurs when displaying virtual reality content.
Since these features are usually not printed on the box, the user must wait for the handset manufacturer or Google to declare whether the handset supports Daydream. Currently, the only mobile phone that has been formally confirmed to support Daydream is the Pixel mobile phone.
