Qualcomm launches the first secure fingerprint authentication for Tencent WeChat mobile payment service

Qualcomm Incorporated announced on February 17, 2016 that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., became the first company to introduce hardware-based biometric fingerprint authentication for Tencent WeChat mobile payment services. This new feature allows users to replace traditional PIN codes or passwords with a secure fingerprint scan for online transactions on their mobile devices. The technology is powered by the Qualcomm Haven™ security platform, which supports the "SOTER" protocol developed by Tencent. It includes functions like fingerprint matching, processing, and local storage, as well as secure communication with Tencent's cloud servers. This innovation is currently available in China through the vivo X6 smartphone, which features the Qualcomm Snapdragon™ Netcom. More smartphones are expected to adopt this technology in the coming months. Sy Choudhury, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, emphasized that the Qualcomm Haven platform offers robust, convenient security aligned with the latest mobile payment standards. He added that users can now use fingerprints, faces, or eyes to access accounts and make online purchases, with every step protected at the hardware level. This eliminates the need for cumbersome PINs and passwords that are vulnerable to theft. Feng Lei, Chief Market Officer at vivo, stated that as more consumers turn to mobile payments, the company is committed to enhancing device security. The vivo X6 is an example of this effort, made possible through collaboration with Qualcomm and Tencent. The Qualcomm Haven Certified Architecture is hardware-based, ensuring that sensitive user data and biometric information remain protected, regardless of the application or operating system being used. Even if the OS is compromised, the data stored in hardware remains safe. Designed specifically for Opteron processors, the Qualcomm Haven security platform enables full integration across the entire system, from hardware to software, delivering strong security without sacrificing performance or battery life. WeChat, a leading social app developed by Tencent, provides secure and convenient payment services to over 650 million monthly active users worldwide as of September 2015. The Snapdragon 400, 600, and 800 series processors support secure biometric fingerprint authentication for WeChat payments. During the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Hall 3 of the Fira Gran Via Convention Center, Qualcomm will demonstrate how WeChat’s secure payment service works on the vivo X6. Additionally, the company will showcase other components of the Qualcomm Haven platform, including: - **Qualcomm SafeSwitch™** – A hardware-based solution for remote device locking and unlocking, helping protect against theft and safeguarding user privacy. This will be demonstrated alongside AVG. - **Qualcomm Snapdragon Smart Protect** – A behavior-based anti-malware technology that uses machine intelligence to detect zero-day threats. Qualcomm will work with Avast to show static and dynamic analysis of Android apps. - **Qualcomm Snapdragon Secure User Interface** – A hardware-protected method for securing password and PIN entry, as well as user interface elements, enabling secure login scenarios such as banking and enterprise access.
