Linear Technology introduces 4 large dynamic range down-conversion mixers

Linear Technology Corp. (Linear Technology CorporaTIon) launched four new large dynamic range down-conversion mixers, these devices belong to the LTC554x series, covering 700MHz to 4GHz wireless infrastructure frequency range.

The LTC554x mixer provides excellent 26dBm IIP3 (input third-order intercept), a low noise figure of 9dB to 10dB, and a high conversion gain of 8dB, enabling the main receiver and digital predistortion receiver to achieve excellent dynamic range performance. The LTC554x series mixers provide best-in-class capabilities, maintain a low noise figure in the presence of strong blocking interference, and significantly enhance receiver sensitivity and robustness. Unlike other mixers in its class, the LTC554x series operates on a single 3.3V power supply without compromising performance, while reducing power consumption by 34% compared to the closest competitive solution in its class.

The LTC554x mixer is specifically designed to meet the requirements of the new 4th generation LTE (Long Term Evolution) cellular and WiMAX base stations, as well as 3G CDMA, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, UMTS and GSM / EDGE platforms. The reliability of these mixers also strengthens other wireless systems (for example: point-to-point microwave systems, cellular repeaters, public safety radio equipment, and military communication systems).

The LTC554x mixer contains an integrated IF amplifier, LO buffer, LO switch and RF balun. The RF input of each mixer is single-ended and 50Ω matched. Two single-ended LO inputs with high isolation are provided for frequency hopping applications. Each LO input is also single-ended and always 50Ω matched, regardless of whether the mixer is running or powered off, and is designed to avoid unlocking the PLL (phase locked loop). The LO input only requires a drive level of 0dBm. All these features will help to create a compact solution with few external components.

The LTC554x mixer has the same pinout configuration, thus allowing designers to share the PC board layout on multiple platforms operating in different frequency bands. This helps users reduce overall costs and accelerate the time-to-market of products. In addition, the pinout configuration of these mixers is similar to the common soldering pin and pinout configurations in the industry, which facilitates customer selection while improving performance and reducing power consumption.

The LTC554x mixer uses a single 3.3V power supply and draws 200mA of supply current. The LTC554x device has a power-off function with turn-on and turn-off times of 2us and 3us, respectively. When disabled, the maximum current consumption of these ICs is 500uA. These products are available in 20-lead, 5mm x 5mm QFN surface mount packages and will begin production in November 2009. The first to be launched will be LTC5541, followed by LTC5543, LTC5540 and LTC5542. All products have provided samples now, and will be produced and delivered in February 2010.
