In 2015, Huawei's mobile phone shipments made history by becoming the first in mainland China to exceed 100 million units. Despite still trailing behind Xiaomi in the second place within the domestic market, industry analysts expected Huawei to maintain strong momentum in 2016 with new product launches. As its brand power continued to grow, Huawei had a solid opportunity to overtake Xiaomi and claim the top spot as the leading smartphone brand in mainland China.
Huawei’s performance in 2015 was impressive, driven largely by its smartphone shipments, which reached an impressive 108 million units. This marked a nearly 44% increase compared to 2014, pushing its revenue past $2 billion. The success of its P-series and Mate series smartphones, along with the joint development of the Nexus 6P with Google, significantly boosted Huawei’s global brand recognition and played a key role in its rapid rise in smartphone sales.
According to IDC data, in 2015, the smartphone market in mainland China saw Lenovo take the top spot with 64.9 million units sold, capturing around 15% of the market. Huawei followed closely with 62.9 million units, securing 14.5% of the market share and ranking second, just ahead of Apple, which sold 58.4 million units. Notably, all top five smartphone brands in mainland China were Chinese companies, while Samsung, once the market leader, was pushed out of the top five.
However, industry experts believed that in 2016, despite Huawei’s current sales being slightly lower than Xiaomi’s, the growing penetration of the mainland market would widen the gap between the two. This could make it more challenging for Xiaomi to maintain its position, giving Huawei a better chance to surpass Xiaomi in the domestic market. The gap between the two is expected to gradually expand.
Compared to Huawei’s nearly 108 million smartphone shipments in 2015, Xiaomi’s market expansion appeared weaker, with a shipment gap of over 7 million units and a sales difference exceeding 20 million. While Xiaomi had previously relied on its hunger marketing strategy and ecosystem approach, along with affordable and high-performance devices, Huawei’s large-scale production and manufacturing capabilities gave it a stronger cost advantage. This put pressure on Xiaomi’s low-price strategy, making it harder to compete.
Additionally, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun announced that in 2016, the company would establish special forces to promote the Xiaomi 5 and set up a Xiaomi Exploration Lab to invest in virtual reality (VR) and robotics. There were also rumors that Xiaomi would launch its first drone product after the Mi balance car, further expanding its product portfolio.
In contrast, Huawei has remained focused on its core business. By leveraging its one-stop model combining telecommunications equipment and smartphones, along with continuous technological innovation and brand strengthening, Huawei is well-positioned to gain consumer trust and word-of-mouth support. This strategic approach gives Huawei a solid foundation to challenge Xiaomi and potentially capture a larger share of the mainland smartphone market in the coming years.
