China's smart grid attracts attention from global power giants

The global power giants attending the World Smart Grid China Focus 2010 Summit here on the 27th agreed that China has great potential in the development of smart grids and has unlimited business opportunities.

Yang Junqian, chief expert of Smart Grid, Electric Vehicles and Renewable Energy at Schneider Electric (China) Investment Co., Ltd., said that the development of smart grids is not about building new grids, but upgrading traditional grids. "Considering the huge scale of China's power grid, the Chinese market has great potential, and the scale of future development is considerable."

He said that although the concept of smart grid was first proposed by the United States, China’s smart grid has developed rapidly in recent years, and it has not lagged behind developed countries such as Europe and the United States in terms of technology development. "China has become Schneider Electric's second largest market in the world, second only to the United States, and Schneider's growth rate in the Chinese market is very fast."

David Moeller, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Duke Energy, said in an interview with reporters that there is still much room for the construction and transformation of China's electric power facilities, and there are endless opportunities for China's smart grid development. "China proposes to vigorously develop new energy industries in the next five years, and building a smart grid is one of the driving forces for the development of new energy."

Recently, in a report named “Accelerating the Success of Smart Grid Pilots” published at the Tianjin Summer Davos Forum, the smart grid was defined as a digital self-healing energy system that uses electricity or gas as a source of power ( Including distributed renewable energy) transmitted to the consumer. Smart grids can optimize the supply of electricity, promote two-way communication between the grids, achieve end-user energy management, minimize power interruptions, and transmit electricity on-demand, resulting in lower costs for power plants and customers, and improved reliability of electricity supply. And carbon emissions are greatly reduced.

The World Smart Grid China Focus 2010 Summit was held in Beijing from October 26th to 29th.
