2015 tablet shipments will reach 150 million

Market research company Ovum released a report on Monday local time, predicting that by 2015, shipments of portable Internet access terminals including the Apple iPad, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and RIM's PlayBook will reach 150 million units.

Tony Cripps, Ovum’s chief analyst, pointed out in the report that the main reason for the growth of portable Internet access devices is tablet PCs. The purpose of consumers’ purchase of tablet PCs is to make up for the shortcomings of smart phones in the Internet. . Portable Internet access devices are the "third" Internet-connected devices in markets where PC popularity is high, and "first" Internet-connected devices in markets where PC penetration is low.

Krips said that in 2015, mobile device shipments in the Asia-Pacific region will show "stunning growth", which will increase from 2.8 million units in 2010 to 52 million units, and its global share will increase from 20% to 35%.

Krips pointed out that despite the increasing popularity, portable Internet access devices will not replace smartphones. For most consumers, smart phones have greater ease of use, so tablets and other devices running lightweight operating systems will not erode the demand for smart phones.

Ovum predicts that Google’s Android and Chrome will dominate the portable Internet access device market, and Apple’s iOS will be second only. Krips pointed out that in 2015, iOS's market share will decline from 90% in 2010 to 35%, Google's market share will rise to 36%, and other operating system market share is 29%.

Krips said that Google and Apple's platform will attract more developers, have the best applications and content, users will fully consider this factor when purchasing products.
