What is the viewing distance of a 120-inch TV?

The 120-inch TV that Wang Keke is drying, what’s the ideal viewing distance?

Choosing a TV based solely on resolution without considering the best viewing distance is a mistake. Many people think that the viewing distances for 720P, 1080P, and 4K TVs are all the same, but that's not true. For TVs priced under 7000 yuan, domestic brands with similar technologies can be casually chosen if the budget is tight. For those within the 5000-8000 yuan range, one might consider premium brands like Sony, Samsung, or LG. Personally, I'd recommend Sony’s 8500D, but it’s only available in a 55-inch model.

The size of the TV screen should always be considered in relation to the viewing distance. Before purchasing a TV, make sure you know exactly where it will be placed, how much space the room provides, and how close you’ll typically be watching it. This will help determine the right screen size. Generally, the common sizes in the market range from 40 to 55 inches. If your living room has a viewing distance of 2.5 meters, a 40-inch screen would be ideal. For a distance of 2.7 meters, a 42 or 43-inch screen would work well. And for viewing distances over 3 meters, a 47, 48, or 50-inch screen will offer an even better experience.

Middle-income households usually have living rooms ranging from 30 to 40 square meters, with the optimal viewing angle being around 20 degrees. If the distance from the person to the TV is between 3 to 4 meters, a 50-inch TV would be perfect for the living room. Once the size is determined, consumers often face another dilemma. There are numerous 50-inch smart TVs available. For instance, LeTV has released several models in this size, highlighting the high market demand.

For a 120-inch TV, we can roughly estimate the viewing distance.

Based on many practical experiences, there’s no strict rule for this distance. It really depends on personal preference. My suggestion is to visit a cinema and try sitting in different rows to see which position feels most comfortable. Ideally, you should measure the width of the cinema screen, either by asking staff or doing it yourself. If you’re shy about bringing a measuring tape, there are affordable laser rangefinders available on Taobao. Simply remembering the ratio is sufficient, and you can apply it at home.

Taking uMax120 as an example, based on the screen height, the viewing distance should be about 2 to 2.5 times the height of the screen, which means for a 120-inch TV, it would be approximately 3 to 3.7 meters. However, if the viewing distance is calculated using the formula (length of the picture focus line divided by 0.84), for a 120-inch TV, it would be around 3.6 meters. Watching a 120-inch TV at 3.6 meters, I found that the edges of the screen were slightly out of my field of vision. My eyes mostly focused on the center of the screen, missing some peripheral details. Personally, I find 4 to 4.5 meters to be a better distance, allowing me to take in the entire picture in a panoramic view.
