China's LED bulb lamp technology patent status and future development trend

LED bulbs are a new generation of lighting fixtures that use the shape of the bulbs that people are used to – spherical, and the internal light source is LED. Compared with traditional tungsten bulbs and fluorescent bulbs, they have: energy saving and environmental protection, long service life. The advantages of fast response, high luminous efficiency and strong controllability have broad application prospects in the field of household lighting. In recent years, China's LED lighting technology has developed rapidly. LED bulbs are one of the most common lighting fixtures. The number of patent applications has increased substantially. As of December 31, 2014, the invention of LED bulbs disclosed in the CNABS patent database was disclosed. A total of 1,787 patents and a total of 4,456 utility model patents. The analysis of these patent data can reveal the current patent status and future development trend of LED bulb technology in China, and provide reference for technology research and patent application for related enterprises and individuals.

1. LED bulb lamp technology patent application status

Based on the patent documents published in the China Patent Abstracts Database (CNABS), this paper publishes statistics on LED bulbs disclosed before 2014 (including 2014). The statistics focus on the structure of LED bulbs and Parts and components, through the reasonable use of IPC classification number, keywords and other retrieval means, the invention and utility model patents involving LED bulb technology are first checked, and then noise reduction, and finally a relatively accurate statistical sample is obtained. Based on the in-depth analysis of the finalized patent literature.

1.1 Patent applications over the years

The distribution of patent applications over the years is shown in Figure 1. The number of applications has increased significantly from 2007 to 2013. The reasons are as follows:

1 With the continuous improvement of China's economic development level, the awareness of intellectual property protection in the whole society has gradually increased.

2 The Chinese government has implemented a series of industrial support policies for the green lighting industry, such as the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan for Urban Green Lighting Projects” promulgated by the Ministry of Construction in 2006. In 2007, the multi-ministerial committee jointly issued the “Financial subsidies for efficient lighting products promotion”. Interim Measures for the Administration of Funds, the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan for Urban Green Lighting Planning” promulgated in 2011.

It can be seen from Figure 1 that the number of applications for utility model patents is much larger than that for invention patents. The main reason is that the LED bulb technology threshold is relatively low, the product renewal cycle is shorter, and the invention patent review period is longer than the utility model patent. Applicants choose to apply for utility model patents, and in order to obtain temporary protection for their technology, applicants often apply for invention patents at the same time.

The main applicant information is shown in Table 1. The applicants are mainly domestic applicants. It can be seen that the government's industrial support for the development of green lighting and the company's technological innovation have achieved remarkable results. However, the distribution of applicants in China is relatively scattered, and there are more individual applications. This is because the technical barriers of LED bulbs are relatively low, and the development of industries/regions in various regions is relatively balanced.
