Atmel today announced the launch of the new ATR0885 Laser Diode Driver integrated circuit for HD-DVD/Blu-ray, DVD, CD player and PC read-only memory (CD-ROM) drives. HD-DVD and Blu-ray are new disk standards that provide far more storage capacity than current DVD standards. Since the new ATR0885 was introduced in a very small package, it is ideal for small SLIM drives on laptops and half-height drives in desktop and DVD players. The ATR0885 is the industry's first product for these applications and is cost-effective. This element is extremely important for high-volume consumer products.

The ATR0885 consists of three output devices, each of which can be connected to a blue laser diode (HD-DVD/Blu-ray) with a wavelength of 405 nm, a DVD laser diode with a wavelength of 780 nm, or a CD laser diode with a 650 nm wavelength. Its competing products only have an output device preset for the blue laser function, while the ATR0885 allows system designers to freely choose among the three output devices for the blue laser function. This means that designers can choose the best output device in their specific design to minimize the connection. This enables the design of the product to be smaller and more cost effective while providing high performance.

To date, the cost-effective HD-DVD/Blu-ray/DVD/CD system requires four pieces of equipment: three oscillator chips and one transimpedance amplifier, while the ATR0885 allows for the creation of an integrated circuit with only one integrated circuit. A cost-effective blue laser system is possible.

Blue laser diodes for HD-DVD and Blu-ray systems require a voltage supply that needs to be able to handle 5 volts above the laser diodes often used for DVDs and CDs. To meet this need, any of the three output devices of the ATR0885 has a separate voltage supply pin to provide up to 8 volts.

For automatic power control, the transimpedance amplifier is integrated and supports all three output channels. The gain of any one channel can be set separately using a single independent resistor.

The integrated oscillator reduces laser mode hopping. With an external resistor, you can set the frequency range of 200-500 MHz for all output devices. The other three resistors allow each output device to swing 100 mA (peak to peak). The oscillator can be arbitrarily set in spread spectrum mode to reduce electromagnetic interference.

Samples of the ATR0885 are now available in a lead-free, green, small QFN24 package. The starting price is $2.60 per unit of 10,000 batches.
